Should I Apply For This Role?
First and foremost, you should not apply to any job that makes you feel uncomfortable. Even if a notice has been approved by our casting team and nudity is a prerequisite for the character, if it feels like something you may be uncomfortable with, it's 100% fine to pass over it.
If you decide to apply, make sure you're aware of the role and what it involves before you attend an audition, so there are no surprises. If a role involves nudity, it should be specified in the casting call. If you choose to audition for a role that might include nudity, be aware you are allowed to and encouraged to bring someone along to the audition for support and protection.
There may be a nudity clause that you're required to sign before you are cast in a role – always read contracts carefully before signing.
What To Look Out For
We often have actors contact us about individuals asking for nude/topless photos in order to submit for a project. This is absolutely not the norm. Professional casting directors would never ask for an email or Skype nude and/or sexual simulation in an audition. Similarly, a professional casting director will never ask you to attend an audition in someone's home or in a hotel room.
What To Do If You're Asked To Submit Nude/Sexual Content
If you are contacted by anyone asking you to submit photos or videos of this nature, we suggest cutting off contact with them immediately. We also strongly encourage you to utilize Backstage’s messaging system and to not use outside email or phones to communicate with someone regarding projects of adult nature. We do our best to vet each and every casting notice but scammers do get through. Should you encounter someone who is making you feel uncomfortable, do not hesitate to get in touch with our customer service department by emailing us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Additionally, if you ever attend an audition where nudity is mentioned that wasn’t in the casting notice or if you ever receive follow up messages regarding nudity after submitting to a project that did not indicate nudity, please reach out to us as well!
If you have screenshots and/or emails regarding this conversation, please include them. We use this information to investigate the casting notice and casting director and determine their veracity.
