How to Write a Cover Letter

It's important when writing a cover letter on Backstage to be brief and to the point. There is a 500 character limit, which includes text, spaces, and punctuation so be sure to be concise. Here are our tips on how to craft that perfect cover letter that will help start your business relationship off on the right foot.


Greet the Person Who Posted the Job

On each casting notice you should see the name of the person who posted the job under the Company section. Remember that name and use it when writing the greeting in your cover letter. It makes a good professional impression and offers a personable feeling to the correspondence. It has been said that the sweetest sound to anyone's ears is the sound of their own name, so reading it is also great.


Show That You Are Available for the Work Dates Required

You should be able to see the dates that you need to be available under the Rehearsal and Production Dates & Locations section of the casting notice. By stating clearly that you are available for all of the specific dates, you are showing serious interest and letting the poster know that they can count on you to be there when needed. This is very important.


Show That You are Serious and Qualified

You want to convey (very briefly) why you think you are the one that should get the role. If under the role description, there is stated a specific skill that you possess, make note of it. Refer them to something on your Backstage profile page, application, or resume that speaks to why you are the one that has the necessary training and/or fits this particular role like a glove. This section needs to be to the point; avoid any rambling.



Thank the poster for the chance to apply to the opportunity and state that you look forward to communicating about this with them further. A nice closing showing gratitude and appreciation for the chance to work with them can only work positively for you.
